The Department of Surgery

Saint Michael’s Medical Center offers a comprehensive range of surgical capabilities using state-of-the-art equipment operated by the most experienced and highly respected surgeons in the region. The hospital has made significant investments in leading-edge technology and infrastructure designed to maintain and build on its clinical excellence leadership, especially in the area of minimally invasive surgical techniques.

The Department of Surgery uses the da Vinci Robotic Surgery system.

This technology, combined with the skill and experience of the Saint Michael’s medical team using it, is why nearly one of every two surgeries performed at the hospital is done in an outpatient setting. Patients can undergo minimally invasive procedures that result in less pain and shorter recovery times and allow them to get back to their normal lives sooner.

Among the surgical specialties that are main areas of focus for the more than 70 surgeons working at Saint Michael’s are:

  • Orthopedics - Board-certified surgeons at The Orthopedic Surgery Institute offers perform state-of-the-art procedures to help patients who suffer from joint pain caused by arthritis, osteoarthritis, injuries, or general wear and tear. They also treat injuries such as bone fractures, ligament tears, or conditions such as Carpal Tunnel.
  • Gynecologic and Urologic – the area where most of the DaVinci robotic-assisted surgeries take place
  • Breast Reconstruction – with a surgical team that is highly experienced in the leading-edge DIEP procedure of building a new breast from transplanted flaps of abdominal tissue.
  • Plastic surgery – led by one of the region’s top hand surgeons.
  • Ophthalmologic – with an average of nearly 500 critically sensitive eye operations performed each year in conjunction with the hospital’s Eye Care Center.
  • Vascular and Cardiothoracic – where our surgeons are experts in limb-sparing endovascular procedures that minimize recovery time, pain, blood loss and other complications. Learn more about how Saint Michael’s surgeons work to save hands, feet, arms and legs from amputation on The Heart and Vascular Institute page. If you are a physician, please call 973-877-2343 to refer patients or schedule procedures.

The hospital also is a regional leader in hepatobiliary surgery, which involves the removal of benign and malignant tumors from the liver, pancreas, gallbladder and bile ducts. These procedures – performed under the aegis of The Cancer Center at Saint Michael’s – require a higher level of skill and expertise as they are among the most complex and challenging surgeries.

Saint Michael’s Medical Center surgeons are assisted in each procedure by a team of experienced operating room nurses with the support of the hospital’s experienced nurses and anesthesiologists who are part of the Pain Management department.
