Saint Michael’s Medical Center, a member of Prime Healthcare, is one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for cardiac care, according to new research released by Healthgrades, the leading resource that connects consumers, physicians and health systems.
It is the fifth year in a row that Saint Michael’s has been named a top 100 hospital for cardiac care. Saint Michael’s is one of only three hospitals in New Jersey to receive this honor.

Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 31 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions. The hospitals that have achieved the Healthgrades America’s 100 Best Hospitals for cardiac care have demonstrated exceptional quality of care.

For the 2022 Report to the Nation, Healthgrades compared America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Care Award recipients as a group, to all other hospitals, as a group, and found: From 2018-2020, patients treated at hospitals receiving the America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Care Award have, on average, a 27.8% lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award. Patients who were treated at hospitals that did not receive the award were, on average, 1.39 times more likely to die than if they were treated at hospitals that did receive the award.
Saint Michael’s received numerous recognitions from Healthgrades for cardiac services, including the Healthgrades Cardiac Care Excellence Award for the fifth year in a row. In addition, the hospital was named in the top 10% in the nation for cardiac surgery, coronary interventional procedures, overall cardiac services (five years in a row), and cardiology services (three years in a row). It was also the recipient of the Cardiac Surgery Excellence Award and the Coronary Intervention Excellence Award.
In cardiac care, Saint Michael’s was a five-star recipient for the following services: coronary bypass surgery (six years in a row), valve surgery, coronary interventional procedures, treatment of heart failure (five years in a row) and pacemaker procedures (four years in a row).
In addition to being named a top 100 hospital for cardiac care, Saint Michael’s was named a top 100 hospital for prostate surgery and is the recipient of the Healthgrades Prostate Surgery Excellence Award for the second year in a row. It was also named in the top 10% in the nation for prostate surgery for the second year in a row. The hospital is also a five-star recipient for transurethral prostate resection surgery for the second year in a row.
From 2018-2020, patients treated at hospitals receiving the America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Prostate Surgery Award have, on average, a 54.6% lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award. Patients treated at hospitals that did not receive the award were 2.20 times more likely to experience one or more complications in the hospital than if they were treated at hospitals that did receive the award.
Saint Michael’s was also a five-star recipient for the following services: gallbladder removal surgery (four years in a row), appendectomy (three years in row), treatment of sepsis (seven years in row), and treatment of diabetic emergencies.
In May, Saint Michael’s was recognized as a Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award recipient for the third year in a row.
Saint Michael’s was recently ranked second in the nation by the Lown Hospital Index for Social Responsibility, which measures hospitals across 54 equity, value, and outcomes categories. The index is the first ranking to assess the social responsibility of hospitals by applying measures never used before like racial inclusivity, avoidance of overuse, and pay equity.
For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide to assess hospital performance in 31 common conditions and procedures and evaluated outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 16 states.
Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected), and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected).
