Newark is the largest and most thriving area of New Jersey. Founded in
1666 by Robert Treat the city has grown to become a hub of many different
industries. It is a city with a long history of prosperity but also diversity.
This diversity led to racial tensions leading up to the Newark Riots in
1967. Since then the city has worked hard to heal its wounds and revitalize
itself into a place of culture and growth.
Much like New York City, Newark is split into many different neighborhoods
and each one of these neighborhoods has a unique flavor and personality,
which is reflected in its people, food, and activity:
Ironbound: a Portuguese dominant neighborhood known for its award winning steakhouses,
diners, and burger joints.
Downtown Newark: Business and entertainment hub of Newark. The Prudential Center and New
Jersey Performing Arts Center can both be found here as well as various
museums and libraries.
North Ward: one of the more affluent and diverse areas of Newark. The Cathedral Basilica
of the Sacred Heart, the 5th largest cathedral in North America, as well
as Branch Brook Park are located in this area and offer some gorgeous
views especially during the spring and fall seasons.
Newark is also home to several universities including the New Jersey Institute
of Technology, Rutgers University Newark, and Essex County College. Saint
Michael's is fortunate enough to be situated next to these universities,
which offers the hospital a chance to foster strong relationships with
these universities as well as provide additional safety for our residents
and staff.
One of the best advantages of living in New Jersey is its proximity to
many different cities. New York City, Philadelphia, Boston, and Newark
are all within driving distance and offers residents a chance to experience
the comforts of a suburban neighborhood with the excitement and electricity
of a urban city.
