Carolyn Allen, a veteran healthcare professional with 30 years of progressive
accounting, auditing, reimbursement, business planning, and leadership
experience, has joined Saint Michael’s Medical Center in Newark
as its new chief financial officer.
“We are thrilled to have Carolyn on the team,” said Saint Michael’s
CEO Robert Iannaccone. “Her experience in the healthcare industry
combined with her leadership skills will be an asset to Saint Michaels
as we continue to build a financially strong hospital that serves the
healthcare needs of our community.”
Saint Michael’s was purchased out of bankruptcy by Prime Healthcare
in May 2016. In a short period of time, the 358-bed hospital has turned
the corner financially. The hospital also dramatically improved its safety
scores, moving from an F in 2016 to an A on Leapfrog this past fall. The
hospital was also named a top 100 hospital for cardiac care by Healthgrades.
“Saint Michael’s has made a remarkable turnaround in the three
years since it was purchase by Prime Healthcare,” Allen said. “I
am dedicated to ensuring the hospital remains on strong financial footing
so that it can continue to provide high quality healthcare to the community.”
Allen has worked as a CFO at hospitals throughout the United States. She
comes to Saint Michael’s after a four-year stint as regional CFO
and vice president of finance for the Western Region at WVUMedicine, the
largest health system in West Virginia, where she had responsibility for
the planning, coordination, and direction of financial activities of the
member hospitals and related subsidiaries/affiliates within the western
region, including the 325-bed Camden-Clark Medical Center.
Allen has also worked as a system vice president of financial operations
and CFO at Southcoast Health System in New Bedford, MA, and as a CFO for
Sharon Hospital in Sharon, CT, Clark Regional Medical Center in Winchester,
KY, and St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, KS.
Allen holds an MBA in finance and accounting from Regis University, a master’s
degree in health care administration from Central Michigan University
a bachelor’s in accounting from the University of Texas at San Antonio
and a bachelor’s in management from the University of Texas at San
Antonio. She is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a Certified Healthcare
Financial Professional (CHFP).
Allen has served as a board member on the American Red Cross and has volunteered
for Habitat for Humanity, Children's Shelter and the Special Olympics.
