NEWARK, NJ - Saint Michael’s Medical Center in Newark was recognized today by NJ Sharing Network for its efforts to save lives through organ and tissue donation.

Saint Michael’s received NJ Sharing Network’s platinum award, the highest level of achievement for hospitals. It is the third year in a row the hospital has been recognized by the non-profit organization responsible for the recovery and placement of donated organs and tissue.

"We are honored once again to receive the platinum award from the New Jersey Sharing Network," said Saint Michael’s Risk Manager Ellie Anderson, who leads the effort for the hospital together with Anne Ruymen, performance improvement coordinator. "The award is recognition of how committed Saint Michael's is to raising awareness among our staff and patients about the critical importance of organ and tissue donation.

Through the NJ Sharing Network, Saint Michael’s participates in the Hospital Campaign, which was launched June 2011 as a special effort of the national Workplace Partnership for Life (WPFL), an initiative of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration’s Division of Transplantation.

The WPFL Hospital Campaign focuses on hospitals and state, regional, and metro hospital associations, enlisting them in the effort and encouraging them to coordinate donor awareness and registry enrollment activities with their staff, patients, and community members.

The award was presented to Anderson and the hospital leadership by Hauwa Adeniji, the Hospital Services Manager for the NJ Sharing Network.

“I am honored to recognize the outstanding efforts of Saint Michael’s Medical Center reaching Platinum Level through the HRSA Workplace Partnership for Life Hospital campaign for organ and tissue awareness," Adeniji said.

"The collaboration between NJ Sharing Network and Saint Michael’s Medical Center supports and prepares families as they make crucial decisions and empowers them to give life through organ and tissue donation," Adeniji said. "This unique opportunity allows their loved one’s legacy to live on and change the path of history of countless others who will now receive a second chance at life”

Since the beginning of the year, Saint Michael's had two organ donors that resulted in one liver, three kidneys and one heart transplanted. The hospital also 1 tissue donor and 3 cornea donations.

The award is based on numerous activities throughout the year promoting organ and tissue donation, including participating in walks, selling t-shirts, staffing an informational table in the hospital lobby, sharing social media posts and a flag-raising ceremony.
