Get to Know Us: Dr. Albert Li

Name: Dr. Albert Li

Title: Chairperson of the Department of Radiology

About: Dr. Li joined Saint Michael’s Medical Center as an interventional radiologist in 2013 and was promoted to chairperson of the department in January 2021. He earned his medical degree from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and did his diagnostic radiology residency and vascular and interventional radiology fellowship at the University of Chicago.

What does an interventional radiologist do? An interventional radiologist is a physician who performs minimally invasive procedures using image guidance, such as computed tomography (CT), ultrasound, and fluoroscopy; provides patient care and management before, during, and after a procedure; and analyzes imaging to diagnose and treat benign and malignant conditions of the chest, abdomen, pelvis, and extremities.

Achievement: Dr. Li was recently recognized nationally for two quality improvement projects he undertook in the radiology department at Saint Michael's. The first project was presented at a national radiology meeting in May 2021. Dr. Li was invited to present the results of his second QI project in person at the Radiological Society of North America annual meeting in Chicago in November 2021.

In his own words: “I have really been trying to improve the quality of radiology that we do at Saint. Michael’s. I have been focusing on patient safety and psychological safety in the workplace for our staff. We’ve always done quality work, however, we can always improve. I want to bring Saint Michael’s radiology to the next level. We’re not looking to improve quality by 20 percent, it just doesn’t happen in health care nowadays because we’ve already done those big changes. At this point, the very small stuff really counts because even 1% improvement adds up over time.”
